Functional Leadership for Youth (FLY) is a comprehensive leadership and life skills program designed for high school juniors and seniors. During the 12-week program that meets three hours one afternoon each week, students will select a non-profit organization and develop a fund-raiser for it. The program takes students through many of the same steps that an entrepreneur goes through to start up a business. Each session, students will engage in discussion about critical factors that shape who they will become as they stand on that threshold between childhood and adulthood such as ethics, relationship skills, and stewardship. In addition, students will understand how corporate charity programs and grants work and how to evaluate charities. Unlike typical classroom programs where students learn theory, participants learn to apply the skills — hands-on, real-time, real world, real people, learning to make a real difference. Class size is limited to 12 to 15 students. The program fee of $600 for each student must be raised through sponsorships from businesses and individuals.
